What to look out for when buying PPI - Health

mortgage protection insurance uk

When looking for Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) you should be aware that there are health matters that you need to take in to consideration. That way you can ensure that the cover you buying is adequate for your needs.

If you require sickness cover, then this option is usually only available if you are in good health. It is unlikely that you will be able to get cover if you have a pre-existing or chronic medical condition.

Some insurers will cover a non chronic condition if there has been no reoccurrence after 24 months or if you have had no treatment within the last 24 months, but you do need to check with your proposed insurer.

If you have disabilities, then your insurer will probably add additional exclusions to your policy.

Always make sure you disclose any health problems to an insurer – that way, you know where you both stand.

And ensure you know what your insurer’s exclusions are so that you fully understand what the cover provides and whether it is worth you actually taking out that element of cover.

Common ailments like stress or back problems may not be covered, so check your insurer’s position on this. Normal pregnancy is not covered under PPI.

Finally, if you do need to claim, you may need to produce evidence from a medical specialist, for example, a consultant.
