Oh I'm afraid they can lay you off while on mat leave. I thought the same thing. And the kicker is because while on maternity leave you are using your EI, you aren't able to collect unemployment because you have used up your eligibility while being on maternity leave. I wasn't on contract. I worked with the organization for 8 years. They laid off a good portion of the company all of whom are able to use their employment insurance until they find a job — not me.
